Hear ye, hear ye: Join our colonial foremothers in Coburg July 4

from Indivisible Eugene/Springfield

Let history speak on the Fourth! Hear ye, hear ye! Come join the Indivisible Eugene Springfield Street Arts/Theater Team on July 4 at Coburg City Hall.

The good people of Coburg have been mobilizing friends and family weekly to protest our current corrupt administration.

To mark our country’s 250 years, they now seek 250 comrades. We are not gatecrashers, no! But beware!

Our group is conjuring up some of our American forebears to speak though us—to exhort, to scold, to encourage and reinvigorate us as we struggle in this critical moment in our democracy.

Which guiding light of American history will you channel? Come dressed as an admired American of the past: your ancestor, perhaps, either hero or troublemaker—a protector/proponent of our rights and obligations.

Or just bring a sign commemorating words that stir YOU to fight for a far more perfect union than we’ve got.

Look for our core group of three p—ed off colonial foremothers, ready with brooms and rolling pins and quotations from the likes of Charlotte Perkins Gilman, RBG, Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, and Teddy Roosevelt.

If you think they were mad that John Adams left “the ladies” out of the big picture in 1776, you should see what they think of the tyrants in power now.

Thomas Paine said it: We have it in our power to begin the world over again.

Let’s get to it, then. Remember, the ancestors gather at high noon! Don’t be late.

This a local Indivisible event! A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

That said, we’d expect conflicting opinions and advice from the ancestors. They’ve been cogitating on power and democracy for hundreds of years, after all.
