Canoe canal footbridge open while awaiting new girder

After the new girder arrives, the footbridge is scheduled to be closed again for three to four weeks to finish construction.

from Eugene Public Works

In February, the Autzen Canoe Canal footbridge was closed for improvements as part of the University of Oregon’s ongoing athletics practice facility upgrades. The footbridge was temporarily reopened March 30 to people walking and biking for several University events, including the Oregon Ducks’ Spring Game (coming up on April 25).

During construction, crews found a girder that must be replaced to ensure the structural integrity of the footbridge. The footbridge was opened to pedestrian and bicycle traffic for the eight to 10 weeks it will take for the new girder to arrive. The footbridge will then be closed again for three to four weeks to finish construction.

The change in schedule for the footbridge does not affect the construction of the nearby parking lot, Lot 8, which will remain closed through August, 2026 for improvements.

Parking access to the Alton Baker Dog Park will not be available at Lot 8 during this period. Dog park users can instead use the parking lot at Alton Baker Park off Club Road or the city parking lot near the Science Center and use the footbridge near the Cuthbert.
